The world is facing a growing mental health crisis. Traditional services are overwhelmed, leaving millions without the support they need.
We all remember Martin Seligman's Ted Talk where he talks about the limitations of traditional psychology (Good but Not Good Enough) and how he highlights how the absence of depression does not equal wellbeing and how he worried that doing counselling and talking about depression he was becoming more depressed.
We all know the potential of what we've learnt and many of us have felt the frustration of not being able to apply it freely and fully.
Coaching alongside wellbeing expertise has clear potential as a service that can change the life of millions.
As MAPPCP professionals, we are the world leading experts in the combined power of wellbeing science and coaching psychology and how those two areas can serve people. We also know the many challenges: lack of regulation, poor quality coaches, lack of understanding from multiple parties... the list goes on and on.
Alone we are capable, but together, that capability is limitless. It's time for us to work together, as pioneers, to take the lead in ensuring a future for all experts in this area.
My vision is unashamedly bold:
"To create exceptional coaching work opportunities for all MAPPCP Experts, past, present, and future"
Imagine every MAPPCP graduate having guaranteed well-paid, consistent coaching hours (I’m thinking 10-15 guaranteed coaching hours a week), giving them great work-life balance, security, and work directly applying everything they’ve learnt. With such a solid work and financial foundation in place they would have lots of time to pursue other meaningful activities and passions whether work or otherwise.
More people would train in it, more Uni's would teach it, more clients would want it, more leaders would offer it. The catalyst of this flourishing begins with every single MAPPCP leader having guaranteed and excellent work. Imagine how many would want to train in it?
We did this with no such guarantees, which just emphasises to me, that we are not just coaches, we are pioneers.
This goal was constructed using Kim Cameron’s Everest Goal concept. Meaning the goal is:
1. Positively deviant — aiming directly for exceptional, out of the ordinary outcomes
2. Makes a contribution — focusing primarily on creating a benefit for others rather than self-interest
This goal also embodies the win-win approach spoken of by Steven Covey... An outcome where coaches win, clients win, government wins. Everyone wins.
His 6th habit in the classic book, the 7 habits habits of highly effective people is "Synergise". Working creatively with other people in a way where the whole is bigger than the sum of it's parts.
There are so many expert coaches out there, learning how to coach more and more... Learning how to market... Learning how to get clients... Learning Sales... But here's the thing. We don't need 10,000 coaches struggling to market to reach our shared goal.
One highly effective marketing message is enough for all of us to have clients and for all future coaches to have clients as well.
In the ongoing discussions based on my Everest goal we will find a way based on the power of working together for a great virtuous goal.
I will start with a series of large-group conversations using the World Café method — a collaborative process that taps into collective intelligence.
Essentially the present and future leaders in this space.

This is an Everest Goal. It’s ambitious, positively deviant, and designed to benefit many beyond ourselves. By starting small with conversations, fuelled by our coaching skills, we can build the foundations for something extraordinary.
Together, we have the knowledge, the passion, and the community. Now it’s about bringing it all together.
